The following is an open letter to the Chief Justice, dated April 29, from Desmond Allum, SC.

Age and distance bestows such freedom which I now take advantage of to address these few lines to you.

As you probably know I have been in the United Kingdom for an extended period. Notwithstanding the distance I have been following closely what has been going on in both the political and legal profession arenas. It is of course in relation to the second topic that I write to you.

We have no problem with former judges deciding to join political parties, and to run as candidates for these parties. The difference is that a former judge is a citizen like the rest of us. We cannot yet refer to Judge Volney as a “former judge” in this debate. He was still on the Bench when he made his decision, and he clearly must have been in some sort of consultation with the UNC even as he enjoyed the status of a High Court Judge.

PM Patrick ManningThe decision taken by the Manning Administration to sign the secretive T&T/Grenada Maritime Boundary Treaty on Wednesday 21 April while he has dissolved Parliament is illegal from the perspective of the laws of T&T. This is a treaty that could have the effect of decreasing the geographical extent of our maritime jurisdiction by establishing delimitation boundaries that decrease the areal limits of our vital northern hydrocarbon-producing marine areas.

PRIME MINISTER Patrick Manning feels “vindicated” by, the findings of the report of the Uff Commission of Inquiry into Udecott and the construction industry.

If, according to AG John Jeremie, Prime Minister Patrick Manning stands vindicated by the Uff Report for his pursuit of the $10 million discrepancy on the Cleaver Heights housing project, by the same logic the Prime Minister and his entire Cabinet must be criminally negligent in failing to prevent the pillage of hundreds of millions of dollars on several construction projects undertaken by Udecott. Sadly, the Attorney General’s statement in the Parliament on Tuesday in laying the Uff Report only illustrated the deep bias held by the Government in the matters probed in the Uff enquiry.

George DanielChairman of the Local Chapter of Disabled People International, (DPI), George Daniel succumbed to an unknown illness yesterday morning at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

Daniel, 45, of Santa Cruz, was reportedly ailing for some time. However, details were not divulged.
