Leroy ‘Mighty Conqueror’ Paul was struck by a car on the night of Thursday 27th January, 2011, while crossing Wrightson Road near the Kalypso Revue Tent at SWWTU Hall. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital. ‘Mighty Conqueror’ was on his way to rehearsals for the 2011 Calypso tent season. His hits included “Trinidad Dictionary”, “Woman And Money” and “Fresh Water Yankee”. He was 71.

Magistrate: Minister to set bar hours

BarDespite assertions by Port-of-Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing that bars in his mayoral district will stop selling liquor at midnight, a senior magistrate yesterday said the court’s hands were tied as it pertains to the law governing the granting of liquor licences.

Chairman of the Licensing Committee for the St George and environs district, Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan said only the respective minister can give effect to restrict hours for the sale of alcohol. The Ministry of Legal Affairs is the ministry under whose purview the granting of bar and liquor licences fall.

Tourism in Las Vegas and Trinidad

Las VegasOne of the top stories in last Sunday’s New York Times was about the tourist Mecca of Las Vegas facing its deepest slide since the 1940s. As I read the story, I reflected on what is happening in our tourism accommodation sector here at home. Let us first touch on what is happening in Las Vegas. Firstly, visitor numbers are down as its usual customers cut back on recreational travel which is natural during a recession. Secondly, real estate and room rates are down. Thirdly, there is rising tourism unemployment as Nevada’s unemployment rates are now the highest in the US. In short, the overall tourism economy in the state of Nevada is under pressure.
