Teen arrested too

South Bureau
Tuesday, June 3rd 2008

ViolenceFifty-four-year-old Ricky Ali appeared in court yesterday, charged with the rape of an eight-year-old girl.

A neighbour, a 16-year-old schoolboy, was also charged with raping the girl on a separate date.

Both were refused bail when they appeared before Magistrate Ramraj Harripersad in the Mayaro Magistrates’ Court.

Ali and the teenager were arrested at the weekend after a report was made by a neighbour of the child, who is now in State custody.

Ali is alleged to have committed grievous sexual assault on the girl on May 24. The 16-year-old allegedly committed the same crime two days later.

Neither accused had lawyers when they appeared in court.

Police prosecutor Sgt Steve Nandoo objected to bail, saying that Ali had a similar sexual offence charge allegedly committed in the Biche area and was out on bail. He was remanded to prison.

The 16-year-old was sent to the Youth Training Centre in Arouca.

The two were ordered to return to court on June 12.

Two charged with raping 7-year-old

Ricky Ali, 54, and a 16-year-old teenager appeared in Mayaro Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with raping a seven-year-old girl.

Ali is alleged to have raped the girl on May 24, while the 16-year-old boy is alleged to have committed the act two days later.

It is alleged that both offences occurred when the girl’s mother was not at home.

Parents of the teenager broke down in tears as the charge was read to him.

Ali and the teenager both bowed their heads. They were not represented, and will re-appear in court on June 12.

  1. What would it take for the present government to declare a state of emergency with respect to the welfare of young girls under twelve in
    Trinidad and Tobago?

There has been a steady increase in published cases of sexual assault against children in the last five years. Drastic action is needed, and it has to come from all sides. Villages block the streets to protest bad roads. They set up roadblocks if one child is run over at a busy intersection, but when it comes to the sexual and human rights of young girls, we behave as a barbaric people, as if any old man who could barely get it up has the right of first try.
When are we going to wake up and realize that we are ruining the future mothers of our nation, and that these harmed young women could grow up to be severely emotionally damaged people? When are the mostly male groups: Parliamentarians, priests, policemen, soldiers, doctors, lawyers and businessmen going to speak us as a group and say enough is enough? When their last child has nbeen raped, at age three months maybe?

We need a national day of mourning and remembrance for all these exploited children.

Who will lead in the fight against crime against children?

Mr. President and Mrs. Maxwell Ricjhards, this seems like your work, since nobody else wants to lead. CAn you become the patron and patroness of all abused children, male and female? You could focus attention on the situation by adopting one of them to live att presidents house.
