Speaking on TV6 news, Acting Commissioner of Police, Winston Cooper, said that against the background of the information given by the courts to Zen with regards to issuing the club with a license to run the premises, the management of Zen was unable to comply with the courts’ request and as such, was denied a license.

Mr. Cooper said that the club’s license came up for renewal and the information he has is that the management of Zen was unable to comply with what was requested of them and as such their license was denied.

It is further understood that when the club complies with the request of the court, the matter involving its license would come up before the courts again and the license may be renewed.

Mr. Cooper said he could not state at the moment what areas the club was found wanting as he did not have that information before him. He further stated that he was not privy to all that information.

When asked if this had anything to do with the Danah Alleyne issue, Mr. Cooper said that it did not. He said that the Danah Alleyne matter is currently under investigation. When asked if this matter was connected to the fracas that happened at the club this morning involving Soca superstar, Machel Montano, Mr. Cooper said this matter is also under intense investigation and would be dealt with as it should.

  1. Zen zapped: Court revokes licence
Zen nightclub on Keate Street in Port-of-Spain has been shut down indefinitely…

    Cops Close Club Zen
Police have closed Club Zen to the public.

It followed yesterday’s decision by the Licensing Committee for the St George West area to revoke the nightclub’s special restaurant licence because of its failure to produce a health certificate.

Chairman of the Committee Senior Magistrate Lianne Lee Kim brought up the issue yesterday as she dealt with several other applications in the Port of Spain Fourth (A) Court, St Vincent Street, Port of Spain.

Police delivered a court order to Club Zen, ordering it closed yesterday.

  2. Why close Club Zen because of thoughtless people. It was not Mr. Soony and Club Zen that caused Akon and Machel Montano to behave in that manner. Club Zen is the only world class club we have in the city. To be current, you got to stay current, the 2020 vision.

  3. This strange closing of Zen

The Prime Minister unwittingly let out that he and club Zen’s owner, Johnny Soong, shared some special relationship when he said that he would meet with him over the Danah and Akon matter. On call-in radio programs, callers picked up on that strange occurrence and when questioned by hosts if they felt that the authorities would act on Zen over this matter, most callers said no.

I feel they are trying to show that Zen is not getting special treatment, but of course, after the club does some minor thing and returns to court, their license would be renewed. The police already stated that the matter of the closing of Zen and the two incidences in the media spotlight were unrelated. Few people believe that and personally, I feel it is all smoke and mirrors.
