    1. I guess Trinicenter is on top of things.. Didn’t see it was posted..

      That’s a nasty snub..

  1. If we are to gauge our standard of literacy by the contents of what our media projects, it would seem that with all of the information about current affairs, we lack basic understanding of how the world should judge us. I was taken aback by the headline that seem to spark our importance in the world of politics based on an invitation to Mar A Largo to partake in the company of Donald Trump. The headline “T&T blanked as Trump invites Caribbean leaders to meeting ” is taken by people like Kamla Persad Bissessar, Ralph Maraj, Padarath, Rodney Charles, Kangal and others as “a slap in the face”, because our government has taken a principled stand of neutrality in the affairs of Venezuela.

Diplomacy is not always about whom we wine and dine with. Its not always about who accept your ideas and who reject them. It is about how the principles you hold dear is played out based on the utilization of tactfulness, sensitivity, discretion, subtlety, finesse, delicacy, savoir faire, politeness, thoughtfulness, care, judiciousness and prudence is played out to the eventual outcome. It would seem that those holding the government to fault because Trump did not invite us demeans our stature. Far from that!!!. What triumph has Trump achieved in foreign policy in his tenure as President of the United States? Nothing!!!!! His policy vis a vis Russia is a failure, his stand on NATO is a failure, his stand on NAFTA is a failure, his hand on EU, Brixit, Latin America, Immigration, Syria, Afghanistan, Middle East, North Korea have all being questioned by professional diplomats the world over as amateurish. So why are we making a fuss because Dr. Rowley did not get invited to wine and dine with Trump because we took a principled stand on Venezuela?

Have those who attack Dr. Rowley’s stand, take some time off to understand that if Trump were to declare Venezuela as a “war zone” Trinidad and Tobago automatically become a target of war?
Because of our proximity to Venezuela we most definitely will feel the effects of war involving super powers like the USA, Russia and China. They all have a stake in the future economy of Venezuela and it all boils down to their self interest. Whatever the effects of such a calamity might entail is not important to the superpowers. We can become a “no fly zone”. Our economy can be easily affected by whatever Trump or Putin or Zi decides to do. If we become a willing participant then we become lawfully responsible for whatever devastation might occur in such an event.

An act of war makes us not just target, but gullible, susceptible and prone to the indecencies of such drastic actions when diplomacy fails. We should applaud our government for decency and not berate it for being at the table selling our souls for a “piece of silver”.

    1. The government of T&T initially expressed support for Maduro. When international heat was turned up against Maduro, led by the US, T&T backed off and adopted a neutral stance.
However, neutrality on this issue is wise and you have laid out an excellent argument for the position now taken by T&T.
