PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Poverty has forced at least 225,000 children in Haiti’s cities into slavery as unpaid household servants, far more than previously thought, a report said Tuesday.
The Pan American Development Foundation’s report also said some of those children — mostly young girls — suffer sexual, psychological and physical abuse while toiling in extreme hardship.
The US / USSR Cold War period, which saw some 291 or more conflicts ,and resulted in an estimated 22millions casualties, was ended since 1989. Unfortunately, the expected peace ,economic prosperity , and political stability that many anticipated did not materialize.
Since the world remained bombarded with devastating class disparities , and political injustice , then ethnic , religious, territorial and nationalist conflicts became part of the new world order, especially within nations of the Global South.
Unfortunately, the two countries that were solely responsible for the devastations , have since kissed and make up , and are prepared to merely exploit this chaotic minefield to their benefit.
This therefore means that a new paradigm is necessary as a way of getting out of the quagmire , so as to eventually move forward. What does this mean , one might ask? Well let’s say that religious leaders cannot simply be interested in saving souls for the life beyond ,when members of their flocks are dead and gone to Heaven , Paradise , or some twisted concept of Samsara.
It includes social entrepreneurs , prepared to look beyond narrow and greedy profiteering ,so as to take up the slack where governments are deficient. This requires new progressive political minds not simply fixated on the tribe , and stupid Medieval outdated ego boosting power plays, but receptive to fresh , novel approaches to problem solving of the issues of the day that indirectly afflicts us all be it poverty stricken , exploitable new aged Haitian slaves , budding youthful pro islamic terrorist suicide bombers, or fortunate child of the upper crust elite , that shivers in horror at the thought of a world that they too would inherit once today’s socially secured parents are old, feeble, and no more.
It also requires trying to reshape regional and more wider multilateral organization that still matters, so that leaders can refocus , respectfully engage, and coordinate efforts aimed at making this a much safer , peaceful and prosperous world – or approximate as close as possible to such lofty ideals.
