Subhas Panday, Mickela Panday and Basdeo Panday
Subhas Panday, Mickela Panday & Basdeo Panday
No Panday in the fray
For the first time in 33 years, no member of the Panday clan will face the electorate in a general election. The final straw came yesterday when the two remaining Pandays, Mickela, daughter of the party’s founder Basdeo Panday, and her uncle Subhas were rejected as candidates for the May 24 polls.

Pandays Booted Out
End of an era as Mickela, Subhas rejected by UNC

Kamla Sweeps Out Pandays
UNITED National Congress (UNC) political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday cleaned house by sweeping out all former MPs who were loyal to party founder Basdeo Panday. None of these MPs were included in the final group of 25 UNC candidates who will contest the May 24 general election.

Bas cries vindictiveness
UNC founder Basdeo Panday has accused the UNC’s new Persad-Bissessar administration of being vindictive in choosing candidates, after all the MPs loyal to Panday were removed from the UNC’s election slate.

…Decades-old family dynasty ends
A political dynasty that spanned four decades ended yesterday with the rejection of Mickela and Subhas Panday as candidates to fight for the UNC in the May 24 poll.

Mickela heartbroken over rejection
After being rejected as a candidate by the United National Congress (UNC), the party her father Basdeo Panday founded, former Oropouche West member of Parliament Mickela Panday yesterday expressed disappointment.

  1. But you mean to say that Kamla choose only eight africans? That is being racial. I was looking for twelve -twelve. Can’t vote for you. Forget it.

  2. what a bunch of misfits..we are heading for a new wave of corruption in this Country…Heaven help us all….

  3. How many indians PNM have???less than 5………..so what are you talking about???
YOU TRINI’S ARE NOT SMART…..THE MOST EDUCATED AND BRILLIANT PEOPLE ARE THE INDIANS OF TRINIDAD

    1. I agree with you. I think this thing our forefathers used to instill in us about africans and Indians, and we should not sit near to them etc, was really a stupid type of ideology.

We past those stages long, log time ago. It’s one love all the way. Not today, nor yesterday but for a very very long time now.

  4. JEAN JOHN MUST BE A RACIST……..ONLY 8?? IS THAT WHAT YOU SEE??
BE MORE TRANSPARENT JEAN JOHN……STOP BEING A MISFIT AND RACIST TO SOCIETY
THIS IS THE OPINION OF A FOREIGNER…NOT A CITIZEN OF TRINIDAD

  5. MY ADMIRATION GOES OUT TO THE PANDAYS AND OTHER SACKED SEASONED EX-MINISTERS/SENATORS WHO WERE FOOLISHLY REPLACED BY POLITICAL NEOPHYTES.THEY COULD HAVE EASILY CONTESTED THE ELECTIONS AS INDEPENDANTS AND CAUSE FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE CO-ALITION(AS COP DID IN LAST ELECTIONS TO THE UNC)BUT THEY UNSELFISHLY CHOSE THE HIGH ROAD AND PLACED COUNTRY AND PARTY FIRST.UNFORTUNATELY THE SAME CANNOT BE SAID ABOUT THE INEXPERIENCED NEW POLITICAL LEADER WHO HAS NOW LOST HER WAY IN THE QUAGMIRE OF DECEIT,VINDICTIVENESS AND CRONYISM. KAMLA YOU ARE NO BASDEO PANDAY.IF BY YOUR ACTIONS YOU LOSE 10%OF UNC SUPPORT IN THE MARGINALS,YOU WOULD HAVE LOST THE GENERAL ELECTIONS AND PROBABLY GAMBLED AWAY THE LAST CHANCE THIS COUNTRY WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE DEBACLE KNOWN AS THE PNM.

    1. I agree with you to some extent. Wasn’t Mikela, Vasant and Ramesh working diligently throughout the the past years. They were servicing their constituents since last elections. What’s their wrong doing?
How can they be replaced with people that nobody knew was in UNC. How can Rambacahan get to fight Tabaquite? What are the others claim to fame?

  6. Kamla seems to be loosing it…kick out every single person with experience…..vote for them and tt will be ruled by jack warner and loose all international credibility as everyone knows he is the most corrupt person ever. Mickela should start her own party

  7. Typical Hindutava line up. I am urging all mmy relatives to vote PNM. We do not need to have T&T become like Guyana where the pro Indian Party negroes to marginalize and discriminate against black people.

  8. The choice of so many newcomers has psychologically weaken the unc faction of the alliance. What happened to the choice of the magistrate?.Heis an important asset to the politics. Also why Prakash Ramadhar was not given Caroni central? His place of residence. What is Suruj doing in tabaquite?
Wendy of the cop has the right concept:Candidate should be from their constituent to be held responsible for their performace.

  9. Cecil , who are you kidding with this naive Panday’s ‘UNSELFISHLY’ characterization? Are you certain you are not a pimple face 16 year old , grappling with the usual hormonal issues of encroaching puberty , as you attempt to enjoy your first house computer, or access to internet service in one of our public libraries?
Since Independence million of Hindus and Muslims have murdered each others in South Asia led by Democratic India ,Islam bomb Pakistan and dirt poor Bangladesh, yet in sweet T&T aka Rainbow country ,all is love and kisses since 1962, unless of course one is linked to someone who posses a ‘big butt and ,kinky hair , or is from the Virgin Continent.’ Let’s keep it real now, shall we?

Herbert Volney to represent St Joseph ? This is perhaps the most stupid political move I have ever seen in my entire life. However the agent of change claims that precedents were set when Lucky or whatever ,was once nominated for the post of President. Lord what are they teaching these comedians in law school.
A second rate Judge ‘angry at being ignored , even after his publicly touted perceived importance,’ has jumped into raw, dirty T&T politics , one day after resigning from the bench, and these folks think that is fine, because ‘when I talk no darm dog bark’ Madame P ,shares that opinion.

Well, Margaret Thatcher had her Falkans war to prove she was tough as any man , even Churchill,Iron lady Eugina Charles got rid of her frontish , useless military ,with a stroke of the pen, American/ Guyanese Janet Jagan ,created a godson to succeed her ,and carry on our dentist uncle Chedi’s legacy, and the original much admired Indira Grandi ,ordered forced sterilization for nearly all low cast women in her democratic country, without much outrage by the world.

I won’t be surprise to hear of a possible war decree endorsed by President Dookeran to attack Bajans upstarts ,for having the gall to try and steal oil and gas 10 miles from neglected Tobago shores, and the temerity to join Guyana in the Caribbean Appeal Courts, when some think otherwise. Perhaps there is hope, for some yet, huh?

  10. The moral and ethical action after a much heated leadership battle is to congratulate the winner and pledge loyalty and support. Regardless of personal disappointments and hurt feelings, the responsible course of action is support and encouragement for the new leader, not lamentations of regret, reproach and condemnation.
What did the Pandays do after the leadership campaign?
They fussed and fumed, showed open hostility against the new leader and even publicly accused her of illegal practices related to voting procedures. This is not how true patriots behave. This is how selfish, egotistical and self-serving individuals behave.
Did you expect Kamla to bring dissidents into her tent? No good leader would be that foolish.Kamla has shown her strength and good judgment by eliminating the Pandays, people who have served well, but considered themselves above the rest.

  11. Perhaps you are now getting what progressive have been telling you all along, the Old schooled leadership as represented by the PNM/ UNC Panman characters , are bot peas of the same pod. Both secretly despise all women , unless they are really members of their immediate families. Not once has you ever heard any of these two men stand up publicly ,and speak forcefully about the wanton displays of abuses, and neglect that were taking place across the nation , especially on poor , underclass women across the nation.
It took Kamla to say enough is enough , after years of humiliation to fight back , and look at the results ? Hopefully , Penelope or some other will have the courage to do the same and take this party away , so as to put this country back on an even keel, as the rank and file males , are ‘cohones’ deprived.
My advice to you still , Brother T, is not to pack your bags as yet for home , as greater surprises have occurred in politics. One never knows what will happen when a person s in the ballot box , even after all the public denunciations and displays of affections when the camera is rolling or a close friend or family is observing. I wish you well.

  12. Shame on you all, this blog feel like something from 1962. Its amazing that we the citizen Trinidad and Tobago are concerned about how many East Indians and Africans are candidates in both UNC and PNM.
    What about the real issues?
Which party is capable of good governance and when will we have an opposition that can actually challenge on behalf of the citizens.
How is this country going to survive with natural gas at 2 mmbtu?
Which party has the balls to implement the recommendations from the Uff report.

    Grow up, its 2010!!!

  13. Stephen you need to throw away those fantasy theoretical political science books my friend , this is what politics is all about in the real world, in case you were in a coma since 1962. Count yourself lucky, for if this banana Republic was Jamaica, or Guyana ,you would have had at lease two thousand ,politically related murders since an election date was announced by our PM – TWO YEARS before it was due.
Can you imagine an African or Asian leader on respective continents ,doing anything like that in trusting the will of the people to decide what direction they want to go via a mandate? Can you imaging if Castro , and the other pseudo democratic Military buffoon in Venezuela, was in charge of Sweet T&T aka Rainbow Country , what they would have done to some comedian foreign ,American, political advisor that was brought in to provide some phantom aid for an Opposition Party?
Don’t worry , once the people speak , then hopefully there’ll be equally sharp media observers , and pressure groups, to ensure that good governance becomes a reality , and immediate actions are taken to deal critically with all crooks that committed acts of treasons like that which took place in 1990 by Uncle Bakr, or all ignored white color criminal activities that most of us are worried about- whether by the Panday or the Manning regimes.
Jockeying for position by Indo / Afro Trinis is not necessarily a bad thing as you claimed, so give it a rest. Both groups felt with some justification, that the other is responsible for the sad state of the country.
Again, some day we hope ,that race or ethnic origins would never be an issue , so that an Afro Trini can speak freely about corrupt crooks and bandits in the Indo business communities , or the fact that many still treat their kids and women as dirt just like is done in the worst parts of ancestral India , while at the same time providing mechanisms for solutions to rectify the situations.
Likewise, would it not be fun to hear an Indo Trini Politician ,or respected leader from that community, point out the penchant of African neglectful fathers ,that frequently make 100 babies or more with 50 different illiterate ,uncaring women ,then abandon them for the state to raise , or the fact that such neglect , and or failure to appreciate education , and develop an independent, entrepreneurial business mindset , as opposed to over-dependence on governmental political handouts , are the real causes for many economic backwardness, social failures, and even criminal behaviors.
Last but not least, would it not be nice when all our leaders can demand that other so called elite minorities -that have been profiting , at our people expenses – step up to the plate and give back to this country, that has allowed them to live better than they could imagine in any part of Europe , Middle East , or other parts of Far East Asia, and Latin America ? You know who I am talking about , they invest very little in our country to ensure it’s continual development, holds the lofty off shore banking accounts , and send their pompous kids to the elite schools abroad , then sits quietly in the corner, or on their expensive Westmoorings yachts ,golf clubs , Fortune 500 board meetings, with those smog , condescending attitudes ,and poke fun at the great grand kids of Slaves ,and Indentured Laborers , while still striving to see how they can still ensure profits.
In the mean time , our schools are failing, jobs are non existent, security is abysmal , and overall quality of life is below that of countries that can only depend on stealing flying fish from Tobago, boring ,misogynistic music , underhand tourism prostitutions enterprises, and rum to boost, and or sustain their economy.
Let keep it real my friend ,for what you want is real patriotism, and honesty in a nation as to it’s history , not stupid political correctness, as practiced by your Brown the clown British PM and similar European jokers, big Brother America where inclusive talks is cheap and dandy , but any one whose descendant are not from Europe are seen as insignificant in reality, and others with similar cosmopolitan backdrops, and contentious racially skewed history , that pretends all is fine.
Let’s continue to wish our people well, and for heavens sake, be vigilant, to ensure that uncaring ,divisive ,selfish , criminals and political non visionaries such as Panday or Manning, never rule the political roost ever again. Most importantly, hold any new leader’s that emerge hands to the fire.
The people of our country deserves better if we are to compete in the 21st century, agreed?
    Warm regards.

  14. So many are getting caught up in the Kamla euphoria that their vision is being clouded. Rowley returns,do not count out the PNM as yet.The swing voters are thinkers, let’s wait and see how the campaigns unfold.
And by the way, Neal, it is the hard work, risks and discipline of entrepreneurs in places like Westmoorings which provide employment, create opportunities and make the nation prosper.
So what if the send their kids to foreign elite schools? This is one entitlement and choice which is well deserved.Without free enterprisers, nations do not prosper.

  15. Speak for your self T-Man about neo Kamla ,euphoria , and clouded visions by ecstatic followers, and recent bandwagon fans.
If eventually, the UNC /COP/NJAC/OWTU love fest can eventually develop 1% of the discipline as the PNM ,then they would thrive ,if successful May 24th beyond one term , which is vital ,if any new government is serious about making any dent on the social and economic landscape of our country.
For the record, no one cares whether the business elites ,good folks in Westmoorings ,Langepark , Valsayn , Maraval, and heaven knows where in the South,do, as far as enhancing the welfares of their kids T-Man , and you the crafty fox knows that fully well.
Likewise you are preaching to the converted ,when you mention that entrepreneurship is the way in which a country prospers. Perhaps one day you’ll have the guts to admit as to what climate existed in our country ,to ensure that these corporate entities you admire so much thrived.
Ever ran into the expression “corporate responsibility, or can you put your teeth into another? It’s called ‘national security implication of poverty ,and inequality.’ Crime is not the result of some cultural defect , my friend so do not get it twisted.
Now you and our selfish business elites would think that your jobs end in grabbing every dime you can , and return nothing to the society , yes? The reason is simple , for you naively think that such dirty tasks such as social development of a people should be left exclusively to the government.
So do not talk about land re-distribution as an asset to be used towards entrepreneurship T-Man. Do not mention anything about the impact of failure to hold assets, and the impact it might have with respect to loans acquisition for others in areas such as John , John, Morvant, Caranege , Mt Dor, La Canoe Rd Santa Cruz,Upper Gonzales Belmont, and Lavantille Rd Febeau village.
Talk instead in coded words about hard work, discipline ,and risk taking predilections by the more noble tribes, T- Man.
Keep putting your heads in the zandole holes , in the naive belief that just easing off the throttle on condescending ,neo racial rhetorics condeming a much maligned people , or think that simply by bringing uncle Dagga and Mc Cloud on board ,is the end all solution ,for everything problematic in your country. As Tambu said , “de journey now start!”Stay honest, and love country. Your humble voice of reason.

  16. I must say, at the end of the day, racism seem to be more important than the bread and butter for our children. All those of you who supported and continues to support the present regime are responsible for present state of our country and your children and the generations to come will suffer the brunt of this wicked racist regime. I want you to look into the mirror of life and see what this government has done for you: Rape our natural resources, made our human resource like puppets in that without a 10 days program they are made dependent and will continue to be dependent like puppets at the end of a string. now is the time for change, do what is right for your children and the children of your neighbors, that is prepare a land that they will want to live in , instead of running away , because of eh crime and criminal activities . Remember change is the hardest thing to accept in life, but change for the better is the4 best thing in life . think5 to 10 years from now, what will your children be faced with, when they are placed in a country with the present living status. imagine the Prime Minister of this nation is saying that crime is a normal thing in Laventile an d surrounding areas. dear God what is left for our nation, for our children and the children to come, bless our ;land and bless our people with what they rightfully deserve, that which their ancestors have labored so hard for, freedom and liberty of slavery. REMOVE THIS WICKED REGIME FOR ONCE AND ALL , may god bless our nation.

  17. I am a Trinidadian Negro (black). There are Indian leaders whom I admire (Basdeo Panday is one). There are Black leader whom I despise for lack of leadership, there are Indian leaders whom I despise for lack of leadership. The first school I attended was San Juan Hindu School. I grew up in Densley Village Tacarigua and have several Muslim friends whom I will give my life for as well as Hindu friends, my father spoke fluent Hindi ( amoung other languages). Not once have I heard a racial slur in my home. So I grew up seeing Trindad and Tobago as a beautiful multi-cultural country (the best on the planet). So to all you racially motivated citizens, I say: Look at the facts, examine the records, think to the future and vote for proper leadership of our country (regardless of race) and bring Trinidad and Tobago back for its present failing state. As for me, I have not seen representation of proper leadership in any of the parties right now (the question of what is proper leadership? can be an entire book) so lets not bebate that here). I will not be voting!!

  18. I am shocked to see these comments. Don’t you all realise that there are more important issues to focus on rather than which political party has more indians or negroes. At the end of the day, it doesn’t put a plate of food on the table for children whose parents cannot afford these necessities or provide them with a proper education. Whether indian or negro we all need the same assistance and the discrimination against one another needs to stop. We cannot move forward like this.

  19. I am sure that we are not as blind as we appear. I am saddened that no ne of the Pandays are in this race.In these hard economic times I will vote with the party that has experience

  20. SORRY TO KNOW THAT THE PANDAYS ARE NOT IN.
BUT I LOVE KAMLA TEAM IT BETTER THIS WAY.
LESS FIGHTING.JUST WAITING FOR A VICTORY ON MAY 25TH UNC BABY ALL THE WAY. WAITING TO PARTY.
    IT ALL ABOUT CHARISMA.
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO KAMLA
    GOOD LUCK
BE SAFE, VICTORY IS FOR YOU.GOOD BLESS

  21. For all you PNM supporters – I’m sorry to hear that your great political drive is based on the number of seats given to Negroes in the UNC alliance. Don’t mind that PM emphasises on Black power, and the “Black man” this and that, while Kamla openly speak of unity and CHANGE. But then again, it take the ignorant and unintelligent being of a nation to keep this place at a stand-still. No wonder he’s stealing your money, and ruining the country’s development. Oh, and by the way – DEVELOPMENT comprises both economic and cultural success. Vote that man back into government – and I hope none of you are bold enough to complain about the nonsense he’s doing to this country. You get what you ask for. And you’re asking for a failed nation. But that’s alright – once the Black man rules, all is good. NOTE my sarcasm, please.
Unity is not about race, about class, about all those insignificant issues. It shouldn’t even be an issue in the first place. Yet, we’re one of the most mixed nations in this doomed world, and yet we’re one of the most divided. Good job to all of you morons. Good job!

  22. oh Waw … I’m now reading the PNM supporters comments… what a bunch of ignorant non-educated, beyond backward and racial idiots…. This is sooo sooo sad…
