West Indian Brian Lara broke the world record for most Test runs before being dismissed for a mammoth 226, early on day two of the third Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.
Lara, 12 runs off the record on his overnight score of 202, surpassed Australian Allan Border's aggregate of 11,174 runs with a flick off the hip to fine leg off Glenn McGrath some 20 minutes into the day's play.
The 36-year-old Trinidad left-hander raised his bat to the appreciative crowd and was hugged by batting partner Daren Powell in tribute to his achievement.
