Election of a Speaker

PNM nominated Professor Max Richards for speaker and he received 18 votes from the PNM and none from the UNC. Therefore he did not receive a negative vote.

UNC nominated Robin Montano and he received no votes from either the PNM or the UNC who nominated him.

PNM's Bureaux raised on a point of order in the parliament that Professor Max Richards did not receive a negative vote but the UNC's choice, Robin Montano, received a negative vote.

Under section 52 Standing order 3* of the constitution, the PNM can now seek leave to have the courts adjudicate on the matter on who should be the speaker of the house.

It seems that the UNC's strategy of not voting for the people they nominated may have backfired.

* I need to verify the correct section of the constitution.
