Both UNC and PNM members of parliament voted against all 5 UNC's nominees.
All 18 PNM members voted for their 5 house speaker nominees.
During the tea break, Basdeo Panday defended the UNCís strategy saying that they (the UNC) do not feel that the election of a speaker was a primary issue.
The PNM is contending that a speaker was appointed, as their first selection did not receive a negative vote and only the UNCís nominees received negative votes.
