Worsening Hurricane Ivan slams Jamaica, kills 11, heads for Cuba, Florida

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica : Hurricane Ivan was upgraded to a rare, maximum strength category-five storm as it lashed Jamaica, claimed at least 11 lives as it pushed relentlessly north toward the Cayman Islands, Cuba and the Florida Keys.

Ivan, now tied for the sixth worst storm ever to hit the Atlantic, was upgraded at 2100 GMT by the US National Hurricane Center as its sustained winds hit 165 miles per hour (270 km/hr) per hour.

"This makes Ivan an extremely dangerous hurricane," said the Miami-based center.
