Residents across Jamaica began a massive clear-up operation tonight as Hurricane Ivan killed at least seven people on the island.
Thousands of residents and holidaymakers spent the day trapped inside hotels, houses and shelters after winds gusting up to 190mph ripped through on their way to the Cayman Islands.
The dream holiday destination – a favourite with British honeymooners – turned into a mudslide after torrential rains caused extensive flooding in towns and villages.
Power lines were torn up and trees were brought down, leaving at least seven people dead.
The total death toll in the Caribbean from Ivan now stands at 44 but is likely to rise as the maximum category five hurricane continues its rampage, with the Cayman Islands and Cuba due to be the next to feel its force.
It is expected to hit Cayman at 8am local time tomorrow (midday BST).
