"The Auditor General is an independent watchdog over the government. Her role is to audit the national accounts of the country to ensure that the figures can be verified and reconciled.

"The present controversy is one that the Attorney General himself recognised posed a serious challenge because he had already advised the Minister of Finance and hence could not also render advice to the independent Auditor General."

'US$26,000 paid overseas for items never received'
A payment of US$26,000 ($176,000) was made by the Ministry of Trade and Indus­try on July 10, 2023, to a company in Indonesia for four laser analysers for use by scrap metal inspectors that were never received and the company cannot be located.

First case under new law for indictable cases goes on trial
The new legislation, proclaimed on December 12, 2023, removes preliminary inquiries for indictable offences, such as murder, kidnapping, money laundering and some forms of sexual abuse, at the magistrates' courts (now known as district courts).

Before this, preliminary inquiries took years before an accused was committed to stand trial at the High Court.

Isan Constant was expected to reappear before Master Margaret Sookraj-Goswami, who on April 15, ordered him sent to St Ann's for assessment.
