Parents knock ministry's last-minute school closure

Education Minister: Yellow-level alerts not enough reason to close schools
The country has been under a yellow-level adverse weather alert since 12am on Wednesday, which is set to end on Friday at 12pm.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Met Office issued an orange-level riverine alert warning of a severe risk to public safety, livelihood and property.

Schools in Tobago closed on Friday
ALL schools in Tobago will remain closed on Friday. The THA Division of Education made the announcement on Thursday evening. It said the decision was made in consultation with the TT Met Service and the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA).

"And they would normally go up there 'cause they have a garden there. And from what the people who were with her said, they didn't experience much rain while they were there. The ravine they crossed is usually dry, and it had some rain, but it wasn't as heavy there as it was on the hills.

"So when they decided to go back because of the weather, it was too late. They didn't know the river was coming down the way it was, 'cause where they were, the rain wasn't as bad. So right now, we are just holding out hope that she would be found," Ramgoolam said.

On Wednesday, raging floodwaters were over eight feet high around Dookeran's home. Luckily, her house was built on stilts, saving her from possible danger when the tributary running alongside her house burst its banks and flooded the area.

"I was upstairs and by the time I realised the drain was flowing over and I tried to come downstairs, the water was already reaching up to the top of the stairs," Dookeran recalled.
