Voter padding drivel from writer

A letter from one Jason Williams ("Voter padding haunts PNM", November 24) really is the limit.

The fact is there has been migration into this country from the islands and Guyana for a very long time before the PNM came into being.

My ancestor came from Tortola; my husband's came from St Lucia in the 19th century. The Mighty Sparrow came here as a child - he won the Calypso King competition in 1956, before the PNM came into power.

With the advent of the aborted West Indian Federation, when Trinidad was awarded capital status, even more people made this country their home.

May I remind Mr Williams that with very few exceptions, we are a nation of immigrants? Is he suggesting that as citizens and residents we are to be denied the right to vote?

When I was studying in England (on scholarship/-study leave from a PNM Government) I became eligible to vote in that country's election by reason of residency. Was that voter padding?

Such utter drivel really should not see the light of day.

J Baptiste,
St Joseph.
