PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: The Trinidad and Tobago government has donated US$2 million to assist persons in the United States affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to government sources, the money will be distributed among four US charities. Each of the four charities will be given half a million US dollars.

These are the Bush/Clinton Katrina Fund, set up by former presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton, The Louisiana Disaster Recovery Fund, The Habitat for Humanity International Katrina Relief Fund and the Church World Service Katrina Fund.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Information Dr. Lenny Saith, speaking at Thursday’s post cabinet meeting said the US$2 million will come from the island’s treasury department.

He stressed that the money was not being donated to the United States government but rather to a Fund that was established specifically to bring relief to hurricane struck victims.

“Cabinet was mindful of the fact that this was a tragedy of immense proportion, and that anything the government could do to assist the people in relieving the pressures they now feel should be done”, said Dr. Lenny Saith.
