12 face charges in airport probe

I'am adding this one......

By Robert Alonzo Guardian

Twelve people, among them businessmen and former Government officials, could face prosecution arising out of the Bob Lindquist investigation into the Piarco airport terminal project, a police source said yesterday.

The file on the probe was handed over to Director of Public Prosecutions Mark Mohammed SC on Monday by the Police Anti-Corruption Squad.

A top police officer said yesterday: "This will be the biggest prosecution ever in the country."

He said several charges of misbehaving in public office, conspiracy and aiding and abetting could be laid.

The source said the investigating team, headed by Lindquist, a forensic accountant, and Supt Maurice Piggott, found good evidence to justify prosecution.

Queen's Counsel Karl Hudson-Phillips is special adviser to the investigators.

Another source said Mohammed will now have to examine the file, which contains more than 200 documents - statements, invoices and award of some contracts.

The probe into allegations of widespread overpricing of material and irregular bidding processes for the new airport started in 2001 after former Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj appointed the Anti-Corruption Squad.

Police also said investigations into the Integrated Security Systems report on fraud, bribes and other fraudulent activities at Petrotrin have intensified.

This probe pertains to the reactivation of the Soldado Fields.
