Food and Folk Fair Goes Back in Time

“DE LONG TIME TING" is the title given to the Food and Folk Fair 2005 presented by the Best Village Trophy competition division of the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, scheduled for the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, on June 10-12.

“The intent is to take a look back at the things that made us into what we are today,” said Norvan Fullerton of the Best Village Division. “We will be showcasing some of the utensils, implements and other stuff reminiscent of a bygone era for the enjoyment of patrons attending the fair.”

The formal opening on June 10 at 8pm will feature competition in the categories Madame Blondelle, Miss Folk Fair, Papa Rabbat, Dance and Drumming. As well, special cultural attractions will be on display.

June 11 is dedicated to the youth, through staging of the Junior Folk Fair, Attractions include a folk house, Miss Petite Mamzelle. Face painting, bouncey castle, competition in dance, drumming and music; children games, workshops in oral traditions, and a Best Village quiz.

“Callaloo” is the theme chosen for the activities of June 12. In addition to the much anticipated variety of food that will be available on the day, patrons can be expected to be entertained by Sounds of Praise, a sun dance ceremony, competitions in literature and music, steelband music, old-time kaisos, chutney, rapso, folk and carnival characters, fashions shows and more.
