A Picton Road, Laventille man yesterday became murder victim number 41. According to reports, Devon Phillips, 20, was at his workplace at a garage on Quarry Road, Laventille, around 3.30 pm, when his eyes caught four men walking on the road outside. One of the men shouted, “What yuh watching me so for? Phillips reportedly responded, “I not on allyuh.” All of the men then pulled out guns and started firing. Two men who were also in the garage ran behind a house across the road, with Phillips behind them.
Phillips collapsed behind the house at number 21 Quarry Road, before one of the gunmen walked up and fired a volley of shots at him. The other two men escaped and have since been warded at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. When Newsday visited the area, the dead man’s mother and aunt, who visited the scene, were too trumatised to speak. Police sources confirmed that four men of Harpe Place in East Dry River, Laventille, were held at Oxford Street shortly after the murder for questioning. No weapons have been recovered.
