The Roman Catholic priest accused of raping and indecently assaulting a woman, was yesterday committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Assizes, after a magistrate ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against him. Earlier this year, the Haitian priest was charged after it was reported that he raped a woman on March 16 and 19, 2004. The matter was presided over by Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls, while attorney Israel Khan represented the State and Desmond Allum SC represented the accused. After hearing the evidence from several witnesses, Mc Nicolls announced his ruling. The matter was heard "in camera." Defence attorney had previously expressed his concern about the matter, saying he was disturbed by what he deemed prejudicial stories carried in the newspapers.
