Hurricane Ivan, which this week tore through Grenada, causing 13 deaths and leaving a wasteland of flattened houses and splintered trees, was today expected to hit Jamaica.
Forecasters believe the storm will hit Kingston, Jamaica's sprawling capital in the south-east, before smashing across the island and exiting at Montego Bay in the north-west.
The storm's leading edge was this morning whipping up heavy rain and winds off Jamaica's eastern tip, and local radio stations reported that a large storm surge had flooded roads there.
