Panday stays on as UNC leader

By Adrian Boodan, www.guardian.co.tt

Basdeo Panday is staying on as political leader of the United National Congress. At a special meeting at Rienzi Complex yesterday, delegates voted unanimously for Panday to remain at the helm of the party.

They called on him to withdraw his decision to demit office at this time, and to take all the necessary measures to lead the party to victory.

The motion, which was moved by Jamal Mohammed and seconded by Henry Awong, gave 12 reasons why Panday should stay.

The document cited the rise of crime, mayhem, corruption and discrimination in T&T as well as state of the party after Panday announced last year his intention to give up the leadership.

In reading the motion, Mohammed said:

"Previous plans by Panday had created a measure of uncertainty and instability in the UNC, and despair amongst its members."

Addressing the packed gathering of delegates and observers, Panday told them he was bowing to their wishes, on condition that, "Every member of the party pledges to exercise the greatest discipline as I have said, and to make this party the most respectable in the country.

"I bow to your wishes, on condition that you are prepared to undergo the sternest sacrifice over the next few months as we prepare to retake the government and lead the country to the goal and prosperity and well-being, which we began eight years ago."

The UNC is now 15 years old.
