National Security Minister Howard Chin Lee

A Businessman who accidentally shot himself in the leg three months ago, is now the Minister of National Security.Howard Chin Lee, owner of Pier I, Chaguaramas, is Prime Minister Manning's surprise choice for the prized job. And yesterday, Manning defended his choice, saying that despite Chin Lee's inexperience, he has the mettle for the job.

"To hold Ministerial portfolio, you need commonsense and a level head and he's brought both in abundance as well as business experience," Manning said after Chin Lee was sworn in at President's House at noon.

Last October, Chin Lee accidentally shot himself in the right leg at a Port-of-Spain shooting range while practising for a national championship.

He also was a participant in the controversial "Single, Sexy, Sold" celebrity auction for the Cancer Society, where he bid $29,200 for a date with TTT anchor Shelly Dass.

Chin Lee and Dass went on their date last Friday at an undisclosed location.

Former PM Basdeo Panday, in response to Chin Lee's appointment, said sarcastically: "He is the same fellow who paid the most amount of money to have a date with a lady.

" That's a good choice...if the Ministry is anything like Pier I, it will turn out to be a good choice."
