Attorney General knocks Integrity Commission

Attorney General Glenda Morean said yesterday that she was not satisfied with the pace of investigations being conducted into the foreign bank account of UNC leader Basdeo Panday.

The Integrity Commission is currently investigating Panday for an alleged failure to declare a UK bank account and other assets.

But Morean told reporters yesterday that she believed that the investigations were not moving as expeditiously as it should.

"These matters require speedy action. And we spent a lot of time and money," she said, adding: "I would want to see it executed with some sense of urgency. She said when one looked at what happens in other systems, in the US, "the Enron and other investigations and the rapidity with which these investigations are conducted," one reaches the conclusion that "something was wrong with our system".

The AG said the normal procedure for such an investigation would be for the Integrity Commission to pass the matter on to the Director of Public Prosecution once they feel that there have been breaches of the law. However she said the DPP, can independently initiate action once it has evidence of wrongdoing.
