Economist warns of civil war

ABSTRACT:
By KEVIN BALDEOSINGH

ECONOMIST Dennis Pantin has warned of the possibility of civil war in Trinidad. Speaking in a panel discussion on constitutional reform on Tuesday evening, the UWI lecturer contended:, “We are heading in a trajectory which has hardened racial divisions. If we don’t watch ourselves, it could lead to violence.”

The panel discussion, which was organised by the St Mary’s Old Boys Association, and held at the college’s auditorium was attended by about 50 people. Other panellists were economist Lloyd Best, management consultant Percy Cezair, and attorney Dana Seetahal. Economist Mary King chaired the discussion.

Pantin said that the system needed to be changed from a “winner take all to an all take win” one. Noting that any decisions the Government made now would have been made even if there was a sitting Parliament, Pantin said the country needed a system which assuaged racial insecurtities and which allowed those who didn’t vote race to have an opportunity to take part in government.
