Ramesh expects action soon on voter-padding

As talk of impending arrests swirls around some UNC MPs, former Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj said yesterday he expects "action" soon (on the voter-padding investigations).

Maharaj's confidence that the investigations would yield results is based on information obtained while serving as AG, and on the pace of the investigations during his tenure, he said.

"The Police and the law enforcement agencies, despite limited resources, have done a lot of work...I would expect that some action should occur soon," Maharaj stated.

He was speaking at a news conference at Team Unity's Woodbrook offices.
Asked to comment on the apparent nervousness of some of his former colleagues, Maharaj said: "People shouldn't worry too much if there is no evidence against them. If they have not done anything that is wrong,...they have nothing to worry about".

He added that if people believed that an arrest was politically motivated and had no other basis, they could always go to the courts. As a matter of fact, on the same day the person is charged, they can seek judicial review," he said. And he noted that if this were the case and the court found in favour of such a person, they would have a lot of money to retire on.
