Karl to serve as Special Prosecutor

By Nalinee Seelal

Newsday

Prime Minister Patrick Manning yesterday appointed former Attorney General Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and former NAR Minister of National Security Herbert Atwell to oversee an investigation into alleged corruption involving previous government ministers.

Queens Counsel Karl Hudson- Phillips was also appointed to the team and is expected to serve as Special Prosecutor.

Yesterday, Maharaj, Atwell and Hudson-Phillips arrived at Whitehall shortly after 1 pm and were led to the office of the Prime Minister. The meeting started at 1.30 pm and ended at 4 pm.

Sources revealed yesterday that Maharaj, Atwell and Hudson-Phillips were given their appointment letters at the end of the meeting.
During the meeting, certain documents involving alleged corruption were made available and reviewed.

The team discussed with the Prime Minister how the probe should proceed, the amount of manpower needed, the type of resources required and availability of key documents to assist in the investigations.

At the end of the meeting Maharaj and Hudson-Phillips left in the same vehicle. They were later joined by Atwell and the three men discussed their appointments over drinks. Contacted last evening, Maharaj offered no comment.
