Anti-police protests disrupt capital city
Enraged over the police-involved killing of three men over the weekend, dozens of people from Sea Lots, Beetham Gardens and Port-of-Spain yesterday staged one of the largest coordinated protests against police since June 2020.

Eight held for PoS protests, national security on high alert
Yesterday's fiery protests around the nation's capital ended with eight people behind bars. However, with the demonstrations sparked by police action over the weekend, it's no far stretch to imagine this would not sit well with protestors. It's why the acting Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob said officers will remain on alert.

Senior cops assure relatives of 'justice' after fatal police shooting of 3 men

MATT cautions Rowley ...warns against self-censorship by journalists
In a news release yesterday, MATT said it is vital that officials remain aware of the power imbalance implicit in their positions and those of journalists who question them privately and at news conferences as representatives of the public interest.

"When press conferences turn personal, there is the potential to create a chilling effect in the form of self-censorship of the journalistic cross-examination of issues in the public interest," the MATT statement said.

AG seeks Bail Bill extension
Attorney General Reginald Armour SC yesterday piloted a bill - the Bail Amendment (Extension of Duration) Bill - which he had opposed when he was president of the Law Association in 2016.

Mark says some very bad cops in the TTPS, fears Bail Bill will make it worse
Mark, who queried the rationale for the bill, said denying bail doesn't solve crime. He said bail is entrenched as a function of the judiciary, but Government was trying to remove that via the bill. He said one of the agencies responsible for enforcing the bill is the TTPS. He said while he had the greatest respect for the police, one had to admit there are some very bad officers in TTPS.

Vacation Revision Prog: 9000 students to benefit from remedial work
"Over 9000 students scored below 50% in this year's SEA and therefore would not be adequately prepared for the secondary school system. There is an urgent need to provide remedial instruction during the July/August vacation period."

She said this would be done in a physical setting to allow students to devote more time "to acquiring competencies which would be essential for the solid foundation required."

Ex-TTUTA head: Ministry of Education must address literacy
While Oliver agreed with the minister that covid19 and online learning did create challenges for many pupils, he does not believe the issue of functional literacy has ever been addressed comprehensively within the education system.

He said, "Covid19 would have been responsible for the drop in the system. Children were out of physical classes for a long time so it had to have had an input. But there is a serious issue in the country, which I had been trying to address since I was TTUTA president and that is literacy in the schools. It has to be improved because a lot of children are not literate."
