T&T Prime Minister's Statement on the Death of Barbados PM

STATEMENT BY HONOURABLE PRIME MINISTER OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO KAMLA PERSAD-BISSESSAR

On the sad and untimely passing of Mr David Thompson, Prime Minister of Barbados, I wish to express deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago as well as on my own behalf to his family and to the people of Barbados.
Apart from being a colleague Caricom Prime Minister, we also belonged to the legal profession, one that he served with great distinction.
Mr. Thompson ran a successful law firm in Barbados before becoming Prime Minister in January 2008, he had not long before that resumed the leadership of his party the Democratic Labour Party.
He was in his mid-forties and is now the third Prime Minister of Barbados to have died while in office. His death in office follows those of Tom Adams and Errol Barrow both of whom died in the 1980’s.
The untimely passing of Prime Minister David Thompson Q.C. has robbed the people of Barbados and the Caribbean of one of its new and important leaders, who had emerged as a critical thinker and firm integrationist.
At age 48 and just two and a half years into his term, Prime Minister Thompson had already made his mark in the Caricom family, with his cogent arguments, firm resolve and pleasant manner.
Prime Minister Thompson’s death has denied the people of all Caricom nations of the opportunity to benefit from his wisdom and vision.
His gritty resolve on such matters as the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME), the illegal drug trade and air transportation exemplified his commitment and passion for his country and the wider Caribbean.
The Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago extend deepest condolences to the people of Barbados, and especially to his wife Mara and children, on the premature death of Prime Minister Thompson.
We wish to assure and comfort them with the fact that the pain of grief is shared by all of Trinidad and Tobago.
