Kamla's Stellar Moment at the UN Posted: Thursday, October 14, 2010

It is patently clear that PM Persad Bissessar is intent on reinforcing her populist national image by conducting important excursions into the sphere international and multilateral diplomacy where an increasing cadre of women heads of government is making their mark.
During her exceptionally brilliant and poignant address that was immaculately delivered to the members of the UN General Assembly on Monday last she transposed the 2010/11 budget theme of partnering with the people/private sector to partnership with the international community to achieve effective problem-solving global governance and being your brother's keeper. She called for rhetoric to be replaced by social activism on all fronts by the rich countries to attain poverty reduction as well as to assist poor countries in realising the social targets set in the UN Millenium Development Goals.
The Prime Minister addressed many of the domestic issues treated within the recent budget albeit in their international ecology. She reaffirmed T&T's commitment to the ideals of global governance and international co-operation under the aegis of the United Nations.
Some the problems which she indentified for serious co-ordinated global action and which are being addressed nationally in T&T are:
-- The welfare/health of the world's children and focus on non-communicable diseases -- Flooding and national disasters requiring international humanitarian response -- Illegal proliferation of small arms, narco-trafficking and expansion of the remit of the International Criminal Court to try drug trans-border offenders. -- Environmental preservation, climate change and gender equity
The Prime Minister made a call for the problems of small island developing states to be addressed. She appealed for more trans-boundary dialogue what she termed conversations to remove the artificial fences erected by aggression, diversity, ethnicity, racism and culture.
She received a thunderous applause to mark her business-like debut address at the UN making us proud.
