Time to replace the PNM
Posted: Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Time to replace the PNM
It is time for a multi-racial and multi-economic group political party to emerge which will effectively challenge and replace the ruling People's National Movement (PNM) at the next General Election.

Proliferation of Fact and Fiction in the Property Tax Debacle
This ill-conceived, thief-in-the night and fiscally obscene property tax is being driven and confused by a conflicting and contradictory interplay of the contending forces of fact and fiction. In one fell swoop all proud resident home-owners of T&T have been reduced to fictitious renters paying fictitiously high rents way beyond their (f)actual salaries in order to arrive at an artificial and fictitious annual taxable value (ATV) for one's fictitiously rented home.

Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL) and subsidiary TCL Guyana Incorporated (TGI), yesterday filed an application in the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) against the Government of Guyana, requesting the CCJ to hold Guyana in contempt of court for failing to implement the Common External Tariff (CET) on cement from non-Caricom sources, as ordered by the court.

LAWYERS acting on behalf of Udecott and on behalf of the Uff Commission of Inquiry yesterday engaged in a series of talks aimed at coming to an agreement on a new consent order to replace the one ordered last week Friday which froze the proceedings.

Udecott not in net
The proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Senate with amendments, will for now not apply to Udecott, Minister of National Security Martin Joseph said on Monday night.

Rowley: UDeCOTT's court move not fooling anyone
Government and UDeCOTT are not fooling anyone with the latest move to amend the consent order to remove the stay on the proceedings of the Commission of Enquiry, Diego Martin West Dr Keith Rowley, said yesterday.

Attorney: Uff lawyers did not request stay
One of the lawyers involved in the Uff Commission of Enquiry into the State-owned Urban Development Corporation of T&T Limited (Udecott) said yesterday Udecott had not indicated it would file an application in the High Court to rescind decisions halting the inquiry from producing its findings.

UDeCOTT backtrack 'not convincing'
Transparency chairman, Warner knock variation to court order

The Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago's decision to revisit the High Court order is an attempt to project itself as a good corporate citizen but it is not convincing, chairman of Transparency International Victor Hart said yesterday.

Rowley calls for details into Hart's salary...
Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley is asking the Minister of Finance to say what is the total compensation package of Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago executive chairman Calder Hart.

Mark: Manning must break silence
Opposition Senator Wade Mark says Prime Minister Patrick Manning has been too quiet on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT) and is calling on him to "terminate his silence".

...Mark tells PM: Show board who is boss

UDeCOTT, enuff already!
Very rarely can there have been a matter of such public interest in which the public, the press and all commentators seem so clearly in agreement as to what is in the public interest and on which the Government appears to agree, but as I write has so far failed to act.

Who is really boss?
While the report in yesterday's issue of Newsday that the Attorney General, Senator John Jeremie, had instructed the Executive Chairman of Udecott, Calder Hart, to have Udecott's team of lawyers return to Court and amend the consent order which froze the Uff Commission of Inquiry, is welcome, the question remains: Why did the Attorney General take so long to act?

Senator: FIU Bill needs amendments
OPPOSITION Senator Mohammed Faisal Rahaman has suggested a six-month sunset clause to the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Bill, saying it required extensive amendments and appeared to be the type of "stampede legislation" that was becoming the norm with Government

...AG: FIU won't prosecute or persecute

Unions main opposition to Govt says TIWU head
Trade unions are now the main opposition group to the Government. So said Roland Sutherland, president of the Transport and Industrial Workers Union (TIWU).

Cops strip search students
POLICE yesterday ordered Form five students of St Joseph's College in St Joseph to strip down to their under garments as the officers carried out a search for $1,400 reportedly stolen from the school bag of a Form Five student. This action resulted in angry parents demanding a full-scale probe into the police's action.

Mc Nicolls' van was not covered
Witty comments, frequent objections and the prolonged cross-examination of a defence witness, yesterday dragged the traffic case against Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls to more than three hours.
