Mercedes owners to the rescue Posted: Monday, December 12, 2005

I was touched by the story of the homeless man helping the rich businessman's son when the latter crashed into the river. I was further touched by the office of the Prime Minister reaching out to the homeless hero. Now you are informing that the worldwide owners of Mercedes Benzes are coming to the aid of this man. What of the young man who was rescued? Or who insisted that he rescued himself from a car crashed upside down in a river and in four feet of mud?
Your original report said that his father was a very wealthy man. I thought the next thing you would report was that this man had found a job for the homeless man to help him get back on his feet. No, instead, people all over the world are responding. Why not the family of the rescued? Isn't that odd? Chiristmas-Divali-Eid is a period of focusing on charity. What are we to learn from this? That it takes extreme poverty and deprivation to have a heart? Could this be why President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is providing reduced cost and free heating oil to the very poor in Boston, Massachusetts, while the rich US based, major companies keep jacking up the prices of oil, electricity, gas for heating homes and heating oil? If one loses a sense of charity when enmeshed in wealth, then, should we not say Glory be to God for being poor? Perhaps that is the message of Christ's having come into the world in very humble surroundings rather than in pomp and majesty. Again, I ask, what is the family of the rescued young man doing to help?
