DOMA going too far Posted: Tuesday, August 2, 2005
DOODNATH MAHARAJ, 10 Yasim Terrace, Lawrence Park, Arima.
THE EDITOR:
SIR the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) as the name reveals, are the owners of downtown Port of Spain.
They now appear to be going too far by focussing their concerns only around the "greedy minority".
A set of people who, according to the latest statistics, show that there are only 222 of them living in TnT, and controlling more than 75 per cent of the commercial activities in this country. They are well spread throughout the country, but all live huddled together in the West.
They all pay rents that are double the normal market value, which effectively means that they take whatever location they want.
They are now attempting to bully and coerce the government into providing special and privileged protection to their clan. They must understand that the job of government is to seek the welfare of the nation.
Priority for protection must be given to the "hot spots" in TnT, and not to groups whose sole intention is in making profits. In review, they totally control the garment industry, fast foods, pharmaceuticals (drugs), private security services, and to a certain extent, the government.
To DOMA be a good Trini, live and let live.
