The people want pan
Posted: Friday, March 15, 2002

By Peter Ray Blood

One of the success stories of Carnival 2002 was the preliminary judging of the Panorama competition in panyards.

After the success of last year's "panyard concerts" and this year's exercise, Pan Trinbago has decided to return to the panyard for the elimination round of competition for the 2002 edition of Pan in the 21st Century.

Over 40 conventional steel orchestras are registered and ready for six nights of fierce competition and a chance to be selected for the April 6 final, at the Queen's Park Savannah.

First prize in this competition, which has been sponsored by TSTT from its inception, is $50,000, and all participants are eager to get their hands on it and claim the glory.

Participants are required to play any piece of music, not a calypso, in calypso tempo.

Yesterday, an excited Patrick Arnold, Pan Trinbago's president, disclosed that the Savannah final will be held under the "Brian Kuei Tung Plan", which was scuttled by the "new" NCC this year.

Describing the event as "a true true family outing", Arnold said the area on which the North Stand stood for Carnival will be transformed into a "music park", with the finalists playing their repertoires until they are called to perform for the judges.
