US has no plans to issue travel advisory on TT

By SUZANNE SHEPPARD

THE UNITED STATES has assured the Trinidad and Tobago Government that there are no plans to issue a security travel advisory on this country. In addition, the United Nations has made it clear that its advisory was not based on any threat of terrorism and there are already signs of a reversal of the effects of the advisory issued by the United Kingdom.

These were the major points made by Foreign Affairs Minister Knowlson Gift yesterday when he delivered a statement in the House of Representatives on the outcome of the three recent damage control missions to London, Washington and New York. Gift said the missions were “highly successful” in restoring Trinidad and Tobago’s image as a premier destination for tourists and investment.

“The success of the initiatives demonstrate that attempts at subversion of this country from either inside its borders or outside, whether by manipulation of facts of through the use of fiction, will not succeed,” he told the Lower House. “The strength and resilience of the people of this country, the sound management of its affairs, and the high regard with which it is held internationally, will all work to derail such an attempt to subvert its interest.”

Gift, who reported on the outcomes of all three missions, said Public Administration Minister Dr Lenny Saith, who was despatched to Washington, met with officials of the National Security Council, the Counter Terrorism Office, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and other agencies and groups.

He said security and crime dominated the discussions with officials of the National Security Council and Government was commended for its efforts to give high priority to security issues.

He revealed: “The United States Government, Mr Speaker, understands that the crime situation in Trinidad and Tobago is indeed worrisome to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago and to the USA as well, but more importantly acknowledges that specific initiatives are in train to treat with the issue.”

Gift said the Government was commended for its commitment to the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism and Prime Minister Patrick Manning has been invited to visit Washington.

In the case of Ambassador John Donaldson’s mission to New York, Gift said the focus was on meetings with officials of the United Nations and “influential diplomatic representatives” of other countries.
