$585,000 stolen cash dug up from hole
In Response To: Guards in $5M robbery get bail ()

By NALINEE SEELAL, Newsday TT

POLICE yesterday made a major breakthrough in investigations into the $5 million Securicor robbery, when they searched the premises of a Rio Claro man and seized $585,000 which is believed to be part of the stolen cash.

Two men ages 40 and 32, of Brother’s Road, Poole Village, Rio Claro were detained.

The 32-year-old man was subsequently released, but sources revealed that charges will be laid against the 40-year-old man. Senior officers were up until late yesterday seeking guidance on what charge could be laid against the man.

Police believe they may be able to recover more of the stolen cash, and said more arrests are imminent.

At around 1 am yesterday, officers from the Homicide Bureau and San Fernando CID went to the home of the Rio Claro man.

They executed a search warrant and noticed a freshly dug hole at the back of the house.

Officers dug the hole and allegedly discovered a container with the cash. The owner of the house and a 32-year-old male relative were detained and taken to the San Fernando CID where they were detained. Sources said the 40-year-old suspect is related to a security guard.

Police were able to get statements which could lead to the recovery of more of the loot.

A Securicor bullet proofed steel reinforced armoured van transporting 14 bags of money was being driven along Corinth Road in St Madeline when the security guards in the van claimed they stopped to investigate what they thought was a blown tyre.

The guards claimed when they came out of the vehicle, they were accosted by three masked gunmen armed with .38 Magnum revolvers. The guards claimed they were beaten, and their hands tied, after which the three bandits emptied the money from the van into a waiting car.

Two guards were later charged with that robbery and were each placed on $300,000 bail.
