Two security officers charged in $5m heist

Express/TT

Two security guards have been charged in connection with last week's record $5 million armoured van heist.

But up to last night not one dollar of the stolen money had been recovered by investigators.

A 33-year-old estate constable from New Grant and a 22-year-old constable from La Brea will appear in court today, charged with larceny of more than $5 million from Republic Bank and $40,000 from Western Union Money Transfer.

The two were also charged with separate counts of larceny of two revolvers and 12 rounds of ammunition belonging to the Securicor company which was transporting the money.

Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson yesterday gave instructions for charges to be laid, after a three-day investigation led by ACP-Crime Oswyn Allard.

Among others involved in the investigation were Supt Dyo Mohammed and Inspt Hillary Brereton.

The Express was told that the investigation would continue apace to hunt down the stolen money which was in $100 bills in 14 bags.

“We know they can't spend it because it will be traced, and we know other people are involved. It's only a matter of time,” a senior police officer said last night.

The robbery took place at Corinth Road, San Fernando, last Wednesday night when the armoured van, transporting money destined for Republic Bank's Harris Promenade, San Fernando, branch allegedly developed a steering malfunction.
