Guards kill bandit in Aranguez

By Nalinee Seelal, TT Newsday

FOUR armed guards shot dead a bandit who attempted to hold up cashiers at G&L Enterprises at Aranguez Main Road around 3.20 pm yesterday.

Another bandit was seriously wounded and apprehended while the driver of the getaway car and another man escaped.

Yesterday, scores of Aranguez residents gathered at the scene of the shooting and attempted to catch a glimpse of the body of the bandit which was at a storeroom at the back of the store.

The bandit who was seriously injured, was removed to an EHS vehicle where he was treated by EHS personnel. The injured bandit was shot several times about the body and was barely conscious following the shooting.

Lenny Hassan, the owner of G&L Enterprises told Newsday that during the Christmas season he usually opens for business on Sunday and had four armed guards in the store.

He stated that around 3.20 pm he was in the office when he heard a commotion and on checking saw two men attempting a hold-up.

Hassan said that his four armed guards went into action and confronted the bandits. A shoot-out ensued and when the smoke cleared one bandit was seen lying dead at the back of the store.

His accomplice was seen lying close to the doorway suffering several gunshot wounds. The third bandit was also injured but managed to escape, while the fourth bandit escaped in the getaway car.

Five customers inside the store witnessed the shoot-out.

The car was found abandoned a short distance away.

Hassan told Newsday that were it not for the armed guards, the bandits would have been able to successfully stage a hold-up and escape with cash. He was high in praise of the actions of his security guards.

District Medical Officer Dr Olowe went to the scene and ordered the removal of the body to the Forensic Science Centre.

Officers of the Barataria Police Station went to the scene and cordoned off the area.

Up until late yesterday the police were trying to identify the dead bandit and his accomplice.

On Saturday, three bandits who attempted to rob two cashiers at the Westmoorings branch of Kentucky Fried Chicken of $65,000 were shot by an armed guard inside an office.

One man was found lying in a drain with gunshot wounds, while the two others escaped.

Police officers carried out a search for the two other bandits who were also shot.

The bloodstained car was discovered at Bagatelle in Diego Martin. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two bandits.

Last Tuesday, an exchange of gunfire between four masked bandits and a security guard who was on duty at the marketing and Distribution Centre in Macoya, ended with one of the bandits being shot dead.

The dead bandit was identified as Everald Hospedales, 27, of Production Drive, Sea Lots.

Newsday learned that almost all business owners who are now opening for business on weekends have taken a decision to hired armed guards to foil any attempted robberies.
