Abstract Newsday

Shame on you UNC opposition members

I'm a Lower Six student of the Point Fortin Senior Secondary School. Although I was not able to vote, I've become both incensed and deflated over the past few days.

Members of the opposition party, shame on you. Your attitude has been nothing but immaturity. In 1995, when the election results were 17-17-2, and Mr Robinson made the difference, automatically giving the mantle to Mr Panday, no one protested. In (2000) when there were allegations of voter padding to win, no one said anything, but now, the same party with the same political leader, who helped vote in Mr Robinson as President is now crying wolf? Shame on you!

Before the President appointed a Prime Minister both political leaders came to an agreement as mature men, and the UNC well supported it because they thought, or should I say had full confidence that he would have re-appointed Mr Panday, but unfortunately, he didn't rule in their favour, so now, with bottles in mouths, they're crying "Robbie". Shame on you!

Manohar Ramsaran, typical UNC member, is looking for a loophole, speaking about what the President based his decision on moral and spiritual values. Now listen to a young, unbiased person's point of view. The President had to appoint "A" Prime Minister either of the two political leaders. So if he infringed on any spiritual beliefs, it is of the leaders, not you, and which was not even the case here.
Mr Ramsaran, I'm sorry you felt offended, but as a minister or should I say, former minister, you should realise that it was evident that Mr Panday definitely doesn't fit what is now required.

The latest development is that Kelvin Ramnath is suggesting to the people to go to the street. This is preposterous! Mr Ramnath, are you supportive of what is presently going on in the Middle East between America and Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, Israel and Yasser Arafat? Are you pleased with what is going on in Argentina and what happened in Guyana after their last election? Mr Ramnath, shame on you. You really think that this is a probable solution or you just don't care, once your government is in power? When people in authority carelessly make these suggestions, especially in a deadlock (18-18), it is almost inevitable that a riot(s) will erupt. A riot between creeds and races which definitely doesn't adhere to our national anthem. As a young citizen, I have the ultimate right to express my feelings and I find this impolitic and most of all ridiculous. Mr Ramsaran said that the constituents are angry and disappointed, who wouldn't be? But MPs have to be their leaders and act as mature men and women and say this is not the way, make the right decision. The citizens look upon their MPs for guidance. Understand me, I'm not condemning the UNC itself but the impetuous decisions they're attempting to make, which unavoidably result in disharmony and riots.

The UNC is setting fertile grounds for the germination for adversities and atrocities among parties, religions and races.
In closing, the President is the Head of State and I believe that people should respect and honour his decisions, no matter what party you belong to.
