Parliament opens today

Newsday

This morning at ten o’clock, the doors of the Red House will open to guests, MPs and Senators for the official opening of the First Session of the Eighth Parliament.

The session begins with simultaneous sittings of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives will meet in the main Parliament Chamber, while the Senate will sit in the nearby Committee Room 4 and both sittings will begin with the respective Clerks reading the Proclamation declaring open the First Session of the Eighth Parliament.

The House will then get down to the business of electing a Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Attorney-at-law Barendra Sinanan, a former San Fernando West MP for the People’s National Movement (PNM) is expected to be elected Speaker, with current La Brea MP Hedwidge Bereaux, another attorney, as the Deputy Speaker.

In the Upper House, former PNM Chairman Dr Linda Baboolal will once again be President of the Senate while Christine Kangaloo will be the Vice President.

After this segment of the proceedings is complete, the new Parliamentarians will take their oaths of allegiance, with 36 Members of Parliament and 31 Senators due to be sworn in. This will be timed to coincide with the arrival of President Arthur NR Robinson, who will inspect a military parade outside the Red House on Abercromby Street before entering the Chamber to address a joint sitting of Parliament.

The 2002/2003 budget will be presented in the House of Representatives on Monday.
