Panday, unable to woo Maharaj, snared Dookeran

THE EDITOR: The recent NACTA poll on the fortunes of the political parties makes very interesting reading. It doesn’t surprise anyone that the PNM is leading.

First of all the PNM has been using political largesse to curry favour with the population. It has spent billions of dollars without accounting to a Parliament or to the people. On the other hand, it is no wonder that the UNC’s support has been slipping. Revelations of corruption, improper tendering procedures, millions of dollars suddenly appearing in bank accounts, etc...have soured the support of many UNC supporters.

According to the NACTA polls, the only way that the UNC could have won the elections was to purge itself of undesirable and deadbeat elements and release itself from the clutches of its financiers and team up with Team Unity and Ramesh Maharaj.

It is obvious that Mr Panday could not break the hold of his financiers to do what is right. It is to Mr Maharaj’s credit that he didn’t go back to the UNC on bended knees but made conditions for an alliance between the Unity and Team Unity. At least he has maintained his stand all along. Not able to woo Mr Maharaj unconditionally, Mr Panday has, instead, snared Winston Dookeran.

It seems that Mr Dookeran has joined the UNC unconditionally.

It is very disappointing that a person like Mr Dookeran will compromise his sense of decency and honesty for political expediency. Maybe not all of us can resist temptation and maintain principled positions.

Crime on the front page

EDITOR: It seems like only yesterday that the Honorable Basdeo Panday was berating editors and newspapers for carrying crime on the front pages of our newspapers. In a remarkable turn around the same Mr Panday and his UNC are now featuring and portraying crime across the national stage, which finds itself in the front page, and we are not even hearing a word of protest from r Panday. However citizens like myself must ask where is the concern for the country's image that Mr Panday found so important and ranted and raved against editors and newspapers for, or is it just one of those issues like alienation, parasitic oligarchy, Trinity Cross, anti-corruption etc, that only becomes real and serious issues, once Mr Panday is out of office. Can someone give an answer?
