Principals unhappy with ASJA impasse

Principals unhappy with ASJA impasse

The Association of Principals of Secondary Schools has said it was “very unhappy with the situation which has unfolded at the ASJA Girls College in San Fernando.”

In a press statement, the prinicpals noted:

“Firstly, the principal Ms Farial Ali did receive the support of the ASJA Board before the Teaching Service could have appointed her as principal.”

Given that, the principals said: “It is difficult to understand how come a Board which endorsed her appointment could suddenly turn against her in so short a time.

“From all reports reaching the Association, the principal has been doing a good job. Teachers and students have attested to this. Results from the CXC examination can also support this view.”

The Association also noted that there was “an established procedure for the removal of a prinipal. What kind of message is the Board sending to the students of the school when they behave in such a manner?

“Locking out a principal is not a solution to the problem. The next thing we know is that students will start locking out teachers from the classroom. This is the message the Board is sending. What about due process and law?”

The Association said it fully supported Ms Ali and expressed the hope that “good sense will prevail.”

It also called for dialogue “as a means of resolving the issue.”

Whenever, the Association added, “a school starts off the school year on an unsettled note, it takes a long time before it can settle down. The students will be the ones who will be losing out in the issue. It is hoped that the Board will behave responsible and resolve the issue amicably and quickly.”
