RELATIVES of Michael Richardson thought that he had suffered a heart attack and died on Wednesday after a gunman shot randomly at a junkyard on Nelson Street, Port of Spain.

So convinced were they that they told the media at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday that they saw no blood at the scene of the shooting.

They believed the 60-year-old man died from mere fright after suffering a heart attack.

According to Richardson’s children, Kelly-Ann Mercury and Michael Brown Richardson, their father was at the junkyard around 4 p.m., having the steering of his Toyota Corolla repaired, when a gunman opened fire indiscriminately. Those gathered scampered for safety.

When all the chaos settled, Richardson was seen on the ground clutching his chest and was taken to Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Richardson was a garbage collector and proprietor, his daughter said, describing him as a hard-working and loving man who never troubled anyone.

But an autopsy performed by Dr Valery Alexandrov stated that Richardson was shot in the left shoulder, with the bullet lodging in his body.

He suffered internal bleeding and died, the report stated.

Richardson’s killing pushed the murder toll to 296 for the year to date.

In an unrelated matter, 73-year-old Belford Prescod was shot in the left foot by an armed bandit who pretended to be a police officer.

The retiree was at his Thompson Trace, Cumana, Toco home around 11 o’clock on Wednesday night when he heard a loud banging on his door and a male voice shouting “police”.

Before Prescod could open the door, the gunman kicked it open and announced a hold up. He robbed the man of an undisclosed sum of money.

The gunman, before leaving, shot the elderly man in the foot and escaped.

Investigations are continuing in both matters.
