One reason why our girls do academically better.

Recent results of Academic testing in Trinidad and Tobago reflected a rather wide gap between the sexes. The girls appeared to be academically superior to the boys and that has resulted in an assortment of observations that are assinine at best. Politicians and academic gurus had center stage in sharing their knowlege with the rest of the population, sadly, the horse has already escaped from the barn.

It is not an absolute reflection of the apparent academic disparity between the sexes. And I suspect that it goes farther than we would want to admit. One component appears to be the lack of male role models which would suggest that the females have more significant role models than the males.

Since we cannot access the above observation with any degree of accuracy, because it often stems from the home, we must look at those in the public arena. If the male is traditionally regarded as the head of the household, be his path honest or dishonest; there are profound expectations.

Since Independence, Trinidad and Tobgo has been immersed in a quagmire of corruption and rarely have women been involved or suspected of involvement in those nefarious activities. Young men readily recognized the successes of those male predators and in many instances ascribe to be successful like them. Women found no role models at that level or under those circumstance.

As we move forward we found that as things changed the more they remained the same. At all levels of governance we find that men are still leading this parade of obscenity and frequently praised for their questionable successes. Meanwhile the young and impressionable males at all levels of our society view this with subtleties of admiration.

When the opportunity arises, the easy way out proves to be readily acceptable because the male leaders in our society and in every other component do not set good examples. In this light what do our young men have as choices? Our females know that they have to acquire marketable skills to be successful while our young males are just waiting for the right opportunity that is but a political moment away.
