Minister in the Ministry of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds says the Police Service is well-equipped to deal with crime

By Adrian Boodan

Minister in the Ministry of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds says fighting crime is not cheap. He said for the last three years, the Government found it fit to allocate the second largest chunk of the budget to his ministry.

Hinds did not say if the same would transpire in the upcoming 2007 budget expected between monthend and next month.

He was delivering the feature address at the launch of the Chaguanas Crime Watch and Crime Hotline at the Centre Point Mall, Chaguanas, on Tuesday.

Hinds said a lot of money had been spent on training police officers to become more proficient, even in areas of public relations.

He said considerable resources were expended to strengthen the Police Complaints Authority to deal with the number of complaints against officers as part of a drive to boost public confidence.

“We spend a lot of money on police reform, police training, and when I hear people complaining about crime on one hand and complaining about government expenditure in crime on the other, I sometimes wonder what do we really want,” he said.

“I heard them complaining about the presence of British officers in Trinidad transferring their skills and their technology for our benefit.

“Our attempt to benefit from the best practices around the world, whether it is from Canada, the UK or the US, people complain a lot.”

He said, too, that the Government had been able put a dent on the scourge of kidnapping by arresting some of the perpetrators and deterring copycat kidnappers.

Hinds said on the heels of a meeting with members of the Chaguanas business community in April 2005, law enforcement officers had stepped up patrols in central Trinidad. (See Page 8)
