Catholic Clergy is in no position to lead CHANGE

This priest, who represents an institution which has perpetuated genocide and other systematic acts of injustice against peoples worldwide, has the gall to urge the nation to pray for a problem that he and his institution are complicit in.

Anyways, I am always skeptical of calls by mainstream religions for people to pray to end social ills. The youths need better examples and they need access to perspectives that speak to their experience, none of which the Catholic Church can provide. The Clergy is in no moral position to lead change, not even in violence ridden communities. If the Church and its clergy are SERIOUSLY interested in making change, then they can start by paying reparations to those people who have been most dispossessed and disadvantaged by their actions. Of course, reparations would include all the prime land that they were able to control from being the religion of colonialism and imperialism.

“Blaming delinquent parenting for the reason why so many young men end up in criminal gangs, Merrick said these men “need more prayers than ever” and this was why the Laventille RC Church had launched its “Prodigal Sons” initiative. He explained that the project involved the recruitment of people into groups who would pray for deviant young men in the community to repent their wicked ways and the names of those persons would be given to the groups.”

This priest is really clueless. This country has been founded on the values and ideals of Christianity, so if the country is floundering, then those same values and ideals that have failed, cannot be the solutions. If the priest and others are blind to the solutions it is because their own biases have blinded them.
