Trinidad Artist Debbie Davies

"The combination of the mosaic theme and spirals in my recent paintings are my visual representation of humanity's commonalities," says Debbie Theresa Davies of her highly textured, abstract works. "We are different, but blend together to form a human mosaic." Davies re-contextualizes the spiral motif common in the iconography of various cultures, from Celtic to Buddhist to South American, spanning the ancient to the modern. A fundamental form in the natural world, the spiral shape is manifest in organic variations such as the Nautilus, fiddleheads, vines, and snakes. The spiral is both universal and ambiguous, an image recognized by all but never singularly defined in its symbolic meaning. Inspired by these themes, Davies allows the painting process to control itself, working spontaneously and yet with a strong sense of geometry and balance. A member of the Brooklyn Working Artist Coalition, Davies regularly exhibits her work in the New York area. Born in Trinidad, Davies grew up in New York City, where she continues to live and work.
