Barbados' 'century of darkness'

COMMON SENSE & EVIDENCE: Barbados' 'century of darkness'

by Henry Fraser

Great House Rules is sub-titled Landless Emancipation and Workers’ Protest in Barbados 1838 – 1938 and it explores how the 83 000 emancipated black Barbadians were betrayed into landless freedom and an existence that was a parody of freedom.

Professor Beckles describes the resistance struggle of the workers as the “Hundred Year War” against the Great House. He dedicates the first volume to the martyrs of “General Bussa’s War, General Green’s Rebellion and Clement Payne’s Revolution”, and “Sarah Ann Gill who stood against evil in high places”, and the second volume to George Lamming . . . “and all the other artists who showed the way”, and to “TT” Lewis and Wynter Crawford, “unsung heroes of the democratic movement”.
