Moving Mandela luncheon was my idea - PM

By Sharon Lym, www.guardian.co.tt

Prime Minister Patrick Manning said yesterday that it was his suggestion to move a luncheon for former South African president Nelson Mandela from Country Club to Hilton Trinidad.

He was speaking to reporters after the opening ceremony of the three-day inaugural International Conference on Business, Banking and Finance sponsored by UWI and Caribbean Money Market Brokers at the hotel.

Asked if the Country Club venue was a concern, Manning said: "Which was obvious to all, yes."

He said all the details of the itinerary for the Mandela visit had been finalised to the satisfaction of both CONCACAF and Government.

Last week, controversy erupted over the protocol for the event.

Manning said he admired the fact that even after 27 years of imprisonment, Mandela was not a bitter man.

"That's a most unusual thing," he said. "He is a living legend. What he has been able to do and how he has responded to the pressures that faced him is a lesson to all people who are in a developmental mode."
