Brian Lara replaced Viv Richards as the highest scorer in West Indies Test history with a brilliant 191 on day two of the second Test in Bulawayo.

He hit four sixes and 23 fours in his 203-ball innings to take his total to 8,625 runs in 98 matches.

West Indies reduced Zimbabwe to 31-3 after finally being bowled out for 481.

But they were held up by Mark Vermeulen (60) and Craig Wishart (86), who shared an unbroken stand of 142 as the home side reached 173-3 at the close.

The tourists began the day on 282-3 and Lara and Ramnaresh Sarwan wasted no time in imposing themselves on the Zimbabwe attack.

They added 69 in 14 overs to take their partnership to 190 before Sarwan was caught by Mark Vermeulen off spinner Ray Price.

But there was no stopping Lara, who leapfrogged England's Alec Stewart and Richards to move up to seventh on the overall run scoring list.

He hit two sixes off successive balls from spinner Ray Price as his century arrived off only 124 balls and the left-hander continued to raise the tempo despite regularly losing partners at the other end.

Lara was 191 not out at lunch but failed to add to his score following the resumption when Andy Blignaut (4-86) found the edge and Wishart took the chance at second slip.

Zimbabwe wrapped up the last two wickets soon after with Price following up his 10-wicket haul in the first Test by returning figures of 5-199.

But having batted so well in Harare, Zimbabwe soon found themselves on the back foot with Vusi Sibanda giving Fidel Edwards a return catch in the second over.

He was out for two and Trevor Gripper followed for a single when he chooped a ball from Merv Dillon into his stumps three overs later.

Zimbabwe slumped to 31-3 when Edwards found a way through Stuart Carlisle's defence to bowl him for 11, but it proved to be West Indies' final success of the day.

Vermeulen and Wishart survived the final session - the latter hanging on grimly despite needing a runner after being struck on the knee by a ball from Dillon.

Wishart looked the more fluent, collecting 13 fours and a six, but Vermeulen also passed fifty before the close and he did it in style by lofting a ball from Chris Gayle over the rope at long-on.
